Vietnam is long and narrow, so the best transport option changes with distance.
Domestic flights
Flying is the quickest way to connect far-apart regions such as Hanoi, Central Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
Trains
Rail travel is slower than flying but can be scenic, especially along the central coast. Sleeper services can also replace a hotel night.
Buses and transfers
Intercity buses are widely used and usually inexpensive. Private transfers are convenient for short tourism corridors such as Da Nang to Hoi An.
Getting around cities
Taxis and ride-hailing are practical in major cities. Walking and cycling work particularly well in compact heritage areas such as Hoi An.
