Getting connected in Vietnam is generally easy. For most travelers, the decision is simply whether you prefer a local physical SIM or an eSIM that can be installed before or after arrival.
Local SIM or travel eSIM?
Both work well for most visitors. A local Vietnamese SIM is useful if you want a local phone number as well as data, while an eSIM can be more convenient because it can be installed without swapping the physical SIM in a compatible phone.
Vietnam's major mobile networks
Vietnam Tourism identifies Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone as the country's major GSM operators. Coverage is good in the main tourism regions, although signal quality can vary in remote mountain, island and rural areas.
Buying a tourist SIM
Prepaid SIM cards are sold at major airports and telecom shops. Subscriber registration is required, so use an official operator or authorised outlet and expect to provide passport identification.
Official tourist eSIM options
MobiFone currently operates a Travel eSIM service for international visitors, including online registration and airport-based activation options. Promotions and data packages can change, so compare the current offer with other operators before travelling.
Wi-Fi and mobile data
Hotels, cafés, restaurants and many airports provide Wi-Fi, but mobile data is useful for maps, ride-hailing, translation and bookings while you are outside. Download offline maps before long rural trips in case reception becomes weak.
Keep your home number available
If your bank or other accounts send verification codes to your normal number, keep your home SIM available if your phone supports dual SIM. With an eSIM-capable device, it is often possible to use Vietnamese data while leaving the home line enabled for incoming messages.
